Dear Parents and Carers,
This week
What a busy time we have had this week!
Our assembly on Monday focused on ‘owning our actions’ and developing self control.
Our children have been working really hard to develop a positive mindset and work at their self control in the class as well as in the playground. We’ve attached a link to the video so that you can reinforce this message at home.
It was lovely to see so many parents at our open afternoon on Wednesday. Your children were so excited to show their work, new classroom and teacher to you.
We also took this opportunity to launch the first meeting for our new Parent Charter Pilot Project. We had a great turn out and the idea was very well received. Rachael Wells our Police Youth Community Engagement Officer supported us in our presentation in her official role as well as that of a P1 mum and we really appreciated her input.
We are starting this term with our Primary 1 and Primary 7 classes before rolling this out to other year groups. This is also a priority for other schools in the local area and is part of a wider movement, Planet Youth, which aims to support healthy habits for our children within the community.
The idea is to empower parents to agree shared boundaries and expectations for our children. It’s also an opportunity to form collaborations with other parents and be able to have a say in your child’s education at Kirn.
We conducted a survey and will share the results at our next meeting which will be on Thursday 1st October at 5.15pm. This will be a starting point to create a Charter to support each other in agreeing expectations for areas such as mobile phones, gaming, bedtimes, etc.
On Thursday, our P3 and P7/6 classes worked with Kirsty MacNab and Rosalyn McKenna to create artwork inspired by the Argyll Collection, a set of beautiful paintings which we were lucky enough to have in the school for the children to work with. The feedback from children and staff was fantastic and we really appreciate the input from Kirsty and Rosalyn in bringing the art alive for the children. Their work was so creative and well observed and the experience will be one that they remember. Kirsty and Rosalyn were impressed by the engagement of pupils and their enthusiasm for critically analysing what they saw.

Report from Head Pupils
Hi, our names are Lucas and Bruce and we are going to tell you a little bit about us.
Both of us are the head pupils and if you need anything you can come to us.
Both of our parents went to Kirn and so do our little sisters. We love playing football and like arts and crafts.
Over the week we will talk about pupil leadership and what the classes are learning.

‘Scottish Government in partnership with YouthLink the national Youth Work Agency for Scotland currently have two live surveys for young people and their families/carers to share their experiences of using smartphones, social media and the internet to identify what support they need to stay safe online.
The first survey explores how children and young people use screens, apps and social media, as well as assessing the possible effects on their wellbeing and their confidence in staying safe on the internet. The second asks parents or carers about their own screen use, how confident they are in supporting their children’s screen use, and what resources they would find helpful, among other questions. Both surveys will close on Wednesday 30 September.
I appreciated many of the younger pupils in P1-6 may not have access to social media, however there is evidence that much younger children are using social media such as Snapchat despite their being an minimum age requirement to use the site. The survey asks which devices children and young people have access to, the reason they go online and how it makes them feel. There are also questions in relation to online learning. I would be grateful if you could encourage your pupils and all school parents to complete these surveys, as it’s vitally important that both are given the opportunity to respond. Parents can of course help their children to complete the survey. The findings from both surveys will be used to deliver new Scottish Government policy to reduce the impact of online harms.
